Animal Welfare and Pet Rehoming Efforts
Bringing Joy and Second Chances to Pets in Need
Our Story
From Passionate Citizens to a Thriving Humane Society
Going back to 1971, we began as a group of citizens advocating for animal rights in Tuscaloosa. Thanks to their dedication, a board of directors was born within the Tuscaloosa County Humane Society — gaining 501(c)3 status and paving the way for our first shelter. For over 50 years we have continued in their efforts to keep Tuscaloosa County’s animals healthy, safe, and placed in loving care. As we continue to evolve, thousands of animals are benefiting from our work.
No Kill 2025: Best Friends Network Partner
HSWA is a network partner of Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization helping to promote pet adoption, no-kill animal rescue, and spay-and-neuter practices.
Let’s Make A Difference
As a no-kill, Animal Welfare Organization, we are determined to provide quality, humane care for pets in need. Whether that’s sheltering, fostering, or starting the process of pet rehoming, our mission is to find loving families for our ready-to-adopt cats and dogs.
